On the Fence – Elijah, Josiah, and Judah’s Idolatry | YHVH and Asherah | Prophets of Baal | Idolatry
Join us for services at Founded in Truth Fellowship this Saturday, January 21st, at 11:00 AM EST! We offer both in-person services as well as live-streamed online worship services. We begin services with a time of praise and worship music, followed by a review of this week’s Torah Portion, a blessing of the children, and a message based on the Bible that Orbits Yeshua/Jesus. We hope to see you there!
This week, We dive into the story of Judah’s idolatry, Asherah being worshipped alongside Yahweh, Josiah’s reform, and how this story applies today. When Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal and the prophets of Asherah, he asked the people of Judah one question, “how long will you continue to struggle between two opinions?” Judah had become so immersed in idolatry and was so confused about who their God was that they entertained other Gods and even worshipped Asherah as the wife of YHVH. Sometimes we become so familiar with idols that we don’t even recognize we’ve been sitting on the fence about truly being dedicated to God. How long will we refuse to give all our allegiance to God?
Later in the story of Judah, a righteous king named Josiah comes to power. Josiah destroyed the idols, temples, and high places Judah had built and was primarily on a mission to eliminate all of the Asherah idols in the land. He re-directed the worship of Yahweh back to the temple in Jerusalem and called the people to repentance once again.

In this message, we talk about what the Bible says about Hezekiah’s preparation for the incoming Assyrian siege on Jerusalem and how he chose to destroy people’s houses to build up defenses, reroute the primary water source, and store up weapons of war instead of trusting in God. The prophet Isaiah criticizes Jerusalem for relying on their own efforts instead of having faith that He would save them.
